Enforcement of Illegally Posted Advertising Signs |
Lexington County Sheriff’s Department code enforcement officers and resident deputies on Friday, November 14 will conduct an enforcement sweep to remove advertising signs that illegally have been posted on utility poles and the road right-of-way at major road intersections in Cayce, Chapin, Irmo, West Columbia and other communities in northern Lexington County.
Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies will seize advertising signs that illegally are posted on telephone and electricity utility poles, street signs and stop signs as well as signs that illegally are posted in the road right-of-way. The enforcement operation will begin at about 8 a.m. on Friday.
Code enforcement officers regularly contact businesses that have posted advertising signs in the road right-of-way and on utility poles, street signs and stop signs to inform the businesses that the signs were posted in violation of Lexington County’s zoning law, Metts said. Most businesses quickly remove illegally posted advertising signs after being contacted by law enforcement. Under county law, the illegal posting of an advertising sign carries a maximum fine of $1,087 per violation, per day.
The Sheriff’s Department regularly conducts enforcement efforts because advertising signs that illegally are posted on utility poles, street signs and stop signs create hazards for utility workers and motorists, Metts said. The signs also create quality-of-life concerns because they can fall off and create roadside litter. In addition, the signs subject citizens to unwanted solicitations.
The county zoning law prohibits attaching advertising signs to utility poles, street signs and stop signs and attaching or painting signs on tree trunks, rocks and other natural objects.
