Explorer Post Wins National Award

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Explorer Post 106 won a 2nd place award in a national Law Enforcement Explorer competition which took place in Bloomington, Indiana on the campus of Indiana University between July 14 and July 19.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said members of the Lexington County Law Enforcement Explorer Post 106 earned a second-place finish in a national Crisis Negotiation Scenario. The competition featured 2,400 law enforcement Explorers on 216 teams from all over the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

The Explorers Post has served as an excellent recruitment tool for the Sheriff’s Department, McCarty said. Over the years, numerous former Explorer cadets have been appointed to work as full-time deputies. The program provides excellent training and personal development for teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement.

Explorers Post cadets create fingerprint identification cards for children so that children can be identified readily in the event that they are reported missing, McCarty said. They also direct traffic at various businesses during the busy Christmas holiday shopping season.

McCarty encourages teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement to join the Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 14 and 20, with a clean criminal record. You must be enrolled in school and maintain a “C” grade average. Citizens who want additional information about the Explorers Post should contact Sergeant Jesse Laintz at (803) 785-2481 or via e-mail at

Law Enforcement Explorer’s Post 106 is lead by Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Sergeant Jesse Laintz and Town of Lexington Police Department Patrolman First Class Steffonie Cockerill, McCarty said.
