Investigators Arrest Man for Illegally Operating Gaming House

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators and agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arrested a 44-year-old man for illegally operating a gaming house at a home on Fields Lane near Lexington. Investigators also seized eight illegal video gambling devices that the man operated at the home.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said Gregory Speaks, 44, who does not have a permanent address, turned himself in on Thursday, July 3 on arrest warrants on eight counts of unlawfully possessing a video gambling device and one count of operating a gaming house. Speaks was being held on Thursday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

On Wednesday, July 2, Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators and SLED agents executed a search warrant at a home at 217-B Fields Lane near Lexington, McCarty said. Investigators found that Speaks unlawfully possessed eight illegal video gambling devices. Speaks owns the devices and had them set up for customers to play and receive cash payments as a result of gambling games that the customers played on the devices.

On Thursday, a Lexington County magistrate ruled that each of the eight Pot-O-Gold-type tabletop video poker devices found at the Fields Lane gaming house were illegal video gambling devices, which were subject to seizure by law enforcement officers, McCarty said. Under South Carolina law, a magistrate must determine whether each individual gambling device is illegal.

Investigators found the eight illegal video gambling devices in the living area of the Fields Lane home, McCarty said. The living area was set up as a gaming room, with chairs similar to those that are found at offices and bars as well as tables that can be folded up for storage.

McCarty asked anyone with information about illegal video gambling devices to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
