Deputies Arrest Man for Impersonating Law Enforcement Officer and Kidnapping Women at Motel

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a 29-year-old Columbia man on Wednesday, July 2 on charges that the man impersonated a law enforcement officer in order to unlawfully gain access to a guest room at a motel on Rockland Road near Irmo. Deputies also charged the man with unlawfully detaining a 23-year-old woman and 26-year-old woman after the man unlawfully entered the guest room where the two women were staying at the motel.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said deputies arrested Timothy Maurice Vaughn, 29, of 1600 Harden Street, Columbia, on arrest warrants on one count of impersonating a law enforcement officer and two counts of kidnapping. Vaughn was being held on Wednesday at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $225,000.

An arrest warrant alleges that on Wednesday Vaughn falsely represented himself as an agent with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command to a clerk at a Sleep Inn at 1901 Rockland Road in order to try to improperly obtain information about the 23-year-old woman and 26-year-old woman who were staying at a guest room at the motel, McCarty said. Vaughn was wearing a U.S. Army combat uniform and presented a star-shaped badge to the clerk while falsely identifying himself as a U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command agent.

An arrest warrant further alleges that the motel clerk refused to provide Vaughn with information on the two women whom Vaughn was looking for at the motel, McCarty said. Vaughn then conducted a search for the 23-year-old woman and 26-year-old woman and found the two women at their guest room at the motel.

In addition, an arrest warrant alleges that after Vaughn unlawfully entered the guest room at the motel Vaughn falsely identified himself to the 23-year-old woman and 26-year-old woman as an agent with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, unlawfully detained the two women and ordered the two women to leave the motel with him, McCarty said. The two women told deputies that they were in fear of being arrested or physically harmed if they did not leave the motel with Vaughn, who placed handcuffs on the 23-year-old woman.

The motel clerk reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Department at about 12:23 a.m. on Wednesday, McCarty said. Deputies found Vaughn, the 23-year-old woman and 26-year-old woman at the motel and began conducting an investigation that resulted in Vaughn’s arrest.

Deputies are continuing to investigate why Vaughn was searching for the 23-year-old woman and 26-year-old woman and what Vaughn intended to do with the two women if Vaughn had succeeded in abducting the two women from the motel, McCarty said.

McCarty said deputies also are continuing to investigate information concerning Vaughn. The sheriff asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Vaughn to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
