Cell Phones for Soldiers

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is now accepting used cellular telephones for donation to Cell Phones for Soldiers, which will sell the phones to a recycling company in order to buy pre-paid phone calling cards that will be provided to U.S. military personnel who have been deployed outside the United States.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said used cellular telephones can be donated through September. Citizens who have questions concerning the donation should contact Sergeant David Amick, who is coordinating the event. Sgt. Amick can be reach via phone at (803)223-3778.

Used cellular telephones can be donated to front desk personnel at the James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington. In addition donations can be brought to the North Region Patrol District Office, 111 Lincreek Road, Irmo and the Chapin Patrol District Office, 103 Columbia Avenue, Chapin, McCarty said. Over 7,000 cell phones were collected in 2013 as a result of the Sheriff’s Department’s efforts.

Cellular phones do not need to be in working order, McCarty said. Personal information and photographs should be deleted from cellular phones prior to donation.
