Man Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter in Shooting Death of His Brother

Lexington County Sheriff’s investigators on Monday, June 16 arrested a Columbia man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Gaston in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 15.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said that investigators arrested Calvin Recardo Bryant, Jr., 20, of 208 TS Martin Drive, Columbia. On Tuesday, June 17 Bryant was charged with discharging a firearm into a dwelling and the unlawful carrying of a pistol. On Thursday, June 19, Bryant was also charged with involuntary manslaughter.

An arrest warrant alleges that in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 15, Bryant fired a .40 caliber round into a residence located at 401 Lawndale Drive, near Gaston. While firing his weapon into the dwelling, Bryant in reckless and disregard of safety, shot Marquies Eugene Smith, 19, of 2314 James Street, Cayce in the forehead resulting in Smith’s death on Wednesday, June 18. Bryant and Smith were brothers.

Investigators say that Bryant and Smith intended to fire several bullets into the home located at 401 Lawndale Drive because they were displeased with a prior drug deal that took place with a person who lived at the residence. During the incident, Bryant fired a .40 caliber round that inadvertently struck Smith in the forehead. Smith was transported to Lexington Medical Center where he died four days later.

McCarty asked for citizens with any additional information about criminal activity that Bryant may be involved in to contact investigators at (803)785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC.
