Major John Allard, PIO Office, 785-2415, 24-Hour Press Box: 799-2001, Ext. 1100

More than 6,000 Bottled Drinks and Snacks Donated to USO

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department in partnership with Lexington County School District One, Lexington County School District Two and School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties will donate more than 5,000 bottled water and sport drinks and more than 1,000 single-serving snacks at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 to the USO for distribution to members of the United States armed forces while they are at Columbia Metropolitan Airport. The bottled drinks and single-serving snacks will be delivered to the USO at the airport near the ticket counter for United Airlines.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said the Sheriff’s Department and school districts collected bottled drinks and single-serving snacks as part of the annual Support Our Troops drive for the USO. Sgt. Wesley Swinson coordinated the participation of the Sheriff’s Department in the Support Our Troops drive.

USO South Carolina Director Joanie Thresher said the USO serves more than 7,000 military personnel and their families monthly at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Between late May and August, the USO will be available to serve more than 8,100 soldiers who will report to Fort Jackson for basic military training. The USO has worked since 1941 to lift the spirits of United States military personnel and their families.

“USO South Carolina volunteers continue to make every moment count for the troops and military families visiting our center,” Thresher said.

“Without the support of donors like the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington County School District One, Lexington County School District Two and School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, we could not provide the programs and services that we do,” Thresher said.

The participation of the Sheriff’s Department in the Support Our Troops drive reflects the agency’s mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
