Deputies Recognized for DUI Enforcement

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety honored five deputies with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Division as DUI Heroes in recognition of the number of motorists whom the deputies arrested in 2013 on a charge of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said the five deputies arrested a combined total of 171 motorists in 2013 on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Public Safety Department honored Keith Sprinkle, who recently was promoted to serve as an investigator in the Crime Scene Investigations Unit, as a Gold DUI Hero in recognition of the 75 motorists whom Sprinkle arrested in 2013 on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Metts said. On September 7, 2010, Metts appointed Sprinkle, 27, of West Columbia, to serve as a deputy.

The Public Safety Department honored Field Training Officer Tom Fine and Deputy First Class Dean Smith as Silver DUI Heroes in recognition of the 42 motorists that Fine arrested and the 26 motorists that Smith arrested in 2013 on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Metts said. On January 4, 2011, Metts appointed Fine, 47, of Lexington, to serve as a deputy. On July 19, 1999, Metts appointed Smith, 42, of Lexington, to serve as a deputy.

The Public Safety Department honored Deputy Jon Silcox and Master Deputy Scott Smith as Bronze DUI Heroes in recognition of the 18 motorists whom Silcox arrested and the 10 motorists whom Scott Smith arrested in 2013 on a charge of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Metts said.

On October 3, 2011, Metts appointed Silcox, 39, of Lexington, to serve as a deputy. On November 8, 1982, Metts appointed Scott Smith to serve as a deputy.

“I am proud of the work that Keith, Tom, Dean, Jon and Scott did to reduce impaired driving and enhance safety on roadways,” Metts said. “The arrests of 171 motorists who drove under the influence of alcohol or drugs reflect our agency’s mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County.”
