Fatal Shooting Investigation

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives are seeking help from citizens in identifying two men who shot and killed one man and shot and seriously wounded a second man at about 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 outside a home on Bushberry Road near Pelion. The two men had arranged a meeting with the two men who were shot in order buy a motor vehicle from one of the men who was shot.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives are pursuing leads concerning the identities of the two men who fatally shot Tycus Metricus Toland, 29, of 3835 Savannah Highway, North, and shot and seriously wounded Vonkeith Toland, 33, of 688 Bushberry Road, Pelion. The shooting occurred at the home of Vonkeith Toland, who is the brother of Tycus Toland.

Vonkeith Toland was listed in guarded condition on Wednesday, April 30 at a local hospital, where Vonkeith Toland is continuing to receive medical treatment for gunshot wounds to his upper torso, Metts said.

At about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to a call concerning a shooting incident at Vonkeith Toland’s home and found Tycus Toland’s body in the front yard, Metts said. Tycus Toland was deceased, with one fatal gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Vonkeith Toland told deputies that the two men who shot him and his brother had arranged to meet with Vonkeith Toland at a location in North, Metts said. The two men asked to meet with Vonkeith Toland in order to buy a motor vehicle that Vonkeith Toland owns and advertised for sale on the Internet on craigslist.org.

Vonkeith Toland arranged for the two men to follow Vonkeith Toland and Tycus Toland in a separate motor vehicle from North to Vonkeith Toland’s home near Pelion, Metts said. The two men were riding in a light blue or silver sport utility vehicle.

The two men shot the Toland brothers in the front yard of Vonkeith Toland’s home shortly after they arrived at the residence, Metts said. The circumstances of the shooting incident and the motive for the shooting incident remain under investigation.

Witnesses who saw the two men at the location in North told detectives that one man was a heavy-set African-American, who appeared to be 5-foot-8 and had his hair braided into short dreadlocks, Metts said. Witnesses told detectives that the second man, who also was African-American, had a thin build, closely cropped hair and appeared to be 6-foot-3. Vonkeith Toland and Tycus Toland also are African-American.

Metts asked anyone with information about the two men who shot Vonkeith Toland and Tycus Toland to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can report information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
