Father and Son Charged with Stealing or Possessing Stolen Utility Trailers and All-Terrain Vehicles

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives in cooperation with the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, Newberry Police Department and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged a 38-year-old Lexington man and his 17-year-old son with stealing three trailers and one all-terrain vehicle and possessing two semi-trailers, one tractor, 13 propane tanks and tools that had been reported stolen. The thefts were reported in Lexington, Orangeburg and Saluda counties between February 28 and March 3. The items that were reported stolen were worth a combined total of $86,684.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Skyler Haynes Brazell, 17, of 340 Spring Hill Road, Lexington, on Tuesday, March 11 on arrest warrants on four counts of grand larceny. Brazell was being held on Friday, March 14 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $70,000.

Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Brazell’s father, Todd Haynes Brazell, 38, of 340 Spring Hill Road, Lexington, on two counts of grand larceny and one count of receiving stolen goods, Metts said. Detectives will serve Todd Brazell with the arrest warrants after Todd Brazell is released from the Saluda County Detention Center, where Todd Brazell was being held on Friday on charges that are related to the Lexington County charges.

An arrest warrant alleges that between March 1 and March 2 Skyler Brazell stole one 20-foot white Haulmark Industries enclosed trailer worth about $5,000 from outside a home on U.S. 378 near Lexington, Metts said.

Arrest warrants further allege that between March 1 and March 3 Skyler Brazell and Todd Brazell stole one white Freedom enclosed trailer worth about $5,000 from a work site on U.S. 378 near Lexington, Metts said. The trailer contained tools worth about $2,300.

In addition, arrest warrants allege that between February 28 and March 2 Skyler Brazell and Todd Brazell stole one privately owned Hardee utility trailer and one privately owned Polaris Sportsman 700 all-terrain vehicle worth a combined total of $2,200 from outside a Lexington County Fire Service fire station at 2703 Two Notch Road near Lexington, Metts said. Detectives later recovered the utility trailer that was reported stolen from the fire station.

Arrest warrants also allege that on March 7 detectives found that Skyler Brazell and Todd Brazell possessed one 2003 Evan logging semi-trailer, one 2006 Fontaine flat-bed, semi-trailer, one John Deere tractor, one Frontier tractor attachment, one Husqvarna back-pack leaf blower, three Stihl weed-eaters, one Poulan pole saw, one Weed Eater trimmer, one Troy Bilt pressure washer, one Napa battery charger and 13 propane tanks worth a combined total of $72,184, Metts said. Detectives found all of the stolen items after they executed a search warrant at the home where Skyler Brazell and Todd Brazell live. The tractor was reported stolen in Saluda County. The semi-trailers were reported stolen in Orangeburg County. All of the other stolen items were reported stolen in Lexington County.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Skyler Brazell or Todd Brazell to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
