More Than $6,000 Donated to Explorer Post

Organizers of the fifth annual Scrappin’ with the Law scrapbooking fundraiser donated $6,781 to Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Explorer Post #106. The money reflected proceeds from the scrapbooking and craft event, which was conducted on March 1 at the Sheriff’s Department Training Center at 541 Gibson Road in Lexington.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said about 80 people participated in the scrapbooking and craft event. The money that was donated to the Explorer Post will enable Explorer Post cadets to participate in statewide Explorers competitions as well as pay for equipment and training for Explorer Post cadets.

Explorer Post cadets honored persons who prepared the best scrapbook pages or art work during the scrapbooking and craft event, Metts said. Cadets selected Cathy Hallman of Leesville as the 2014 Scrapbooker of the Year, selected Kristie Taylor of Lexington as the first runner-up and selected Pam Taylor of Leesville as the second runner-up.

Sheriff’s Department Special Projects Coordinator Sandy Paavel coordinated the scrapbooking and craft event, Metts said. Explorer Post cadets helped conduct the event and provided meals for participants.

The Explorer Post has served as an excellent recruitment tool for the Sheriff’s Department, Metts said. Over the years, Metts has appointed many former Explorer Post cadets to work as full-time deputies with the Sheriff’s Department. The program provides good training and personal development for teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement.

Metts encourages teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement to join the Sheriff’s Department Explorer Post. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 14 and 20, with a clean criminal record. You must be enrolled in school and maintain a “C” grade average.

Citizens who want additional information about the Explorer Post should contact Sheriff’s Department Lt. Alan Driggers at (803) 785-2581 or via e-mail at adriggers@lcsd.sc.gov.
