Deputies Arrest Man for Breaking Into Two Homes

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a 19-year-old Lexington man on Monday, February 24 on charges that the man broke into one home on Farmdale Drive near Lexington and one home on Country Oak Road near Lexington on Monday morning.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Gavin Wyatt James, 19, of 129 Platinum Drive, Lexington, on arrest warrants on two counts of first-degree burglary. James was being held on Monday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

An arrest warrant alleges that at about 3 a.m. on Monday the owner of the home on Farmdale Drive reported that James forced open a side door at his residence and stole one purse, Metts said. The homeowner saw James run into woods near his home and reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Department.

An arrest warrant further alleges that at about 3 a.m. on Monday James entered the rear door of the home on Country Oak Road and stole five bottles of alcoholic beverages, including Tito’s vodka, Pepe Lopez triple sec liqueur, Barefoot wine and Duplin wine, Metts said. Deputies later recovered several of the items that had been reported stolen from the homes on Farmdale Drive and Country Oak Road.

Deputies went to the Farmdale Road home in order to investigate the burglary that had occurred at the residence, Metts said. Deputies found that a door that leads into the home’s kitchen had been forced open.

One black purse and one black iPhone cellular telephone, which was enclosed in an Otter Box case, had been stolen from the kitchen at the Farmdale Drive home, Metts said. The cellular telephone was plugged into an electrical outlet in the kitchen at the time that it was stolen.

Deputies saw James running from an enclosed porch that is attached to the Country Oak Road home, Metts said. James dropped several bottles of alcoholic beverages as he ran away from deputies and failed to comply with deputies’ loud, verbal commands to stop.

Deputies positioned themselves on the perimeter of the woods that they saw James enter near the intersection of Farmdale Drive and Country Oak Road, Metts said. Deputies conducted continuous directed patrols on the two roads. Deputies also requested assistance from K-9 Unit Deputy R.D. Longshore and his K-9 police dog partner, Ingas, who is a German shepherd.

Longshore and Ingas tracked James’ movements in the woods, Metts said. Ingas and Longshore apprehended James as James tried to jump over a fence that was about 100 yards from the Farmdale Drive home that James broke into, Metts said. Deputies arrested James in connection with the burglaries at the homes on Farmdale Drive and Country Oak Road.

Deputies found several tablets of Xanax, a medication that physicians can prescribe to treat anxiety disorders, in a clear plastic bag on James’ person, Metts said. James did not have a prescription for Xanax. Deputies searched the woods where James was apprehended and recovered the purse that had been stolen from the Farmdale Drive home. The purse had been covered up in leaves.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving James to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
