Two Men Arrested for Unlawfully Possessing Gambling Devices

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Friday, January 31 arrested a 47-year-old Columbia man and 34-year-old Columbia man on charges that the two men unlawfully possessed five illegal video gambling devices that Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators seized on January 16 at a business on Augusta Road near West Columbia.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Charles Christian Black, 47, and John Lewis Segroves, 34, both of 1624 Wendell Drive, Columbia, turned themselves in on Friday at the Lexington County Lexington County Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington, on arrest warrants on one count each of unlawfully possessing gambling devices.

Black was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center at 7:32 a.m. on Friday, Metts said. Black was released from the Detention Center on Friday after Black posted a $2,500 bond.

Segroves was booked at the county Detention Center at 7:23 a.m. on Friday, Metts said. Segroves was released from the Detention Center on Friday on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond.

An arrest warrant alleges that Black owned five illegal video gambling devices and operated the gambling devices at his business at 4265-G Augusta Road, West Columbia, Metts said. On January 16, sheriff’s investigators in cooperation with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division seized five Pot-O-Gold-style cabinet video gambling devices, one five-camera video surveillance security system and $70 in cash from Black’s business.

An arrest warrant also alleges that Segroves was employed at Black’s business, and Segroves allowed patrons at the business to play games on the illegal video gambling devices, Metts said.

On January 17, a Lexington County magistrate ruled that the five gambling devices that investigators found at Black’s business were illegal gambling devices, which were subject to seizure by law enforcement officers, Metts said. Under South Carolina law, a magistrate must determine whether each individual gambling device is illegal.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal video gambling devices to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can report information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
