Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department fugitive investigators on Tuesday, December 24 arrested a 20-year-old West Columbia man who was wanted on arrest warrants that detectives obtained on Tuesday in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on Monday, December 23 at a home on March Road near West Columbia. The 20-year-old man is accused of shooting a 19-year-old man after the 20-year-old man broke into the 19-year-old man’s home.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Joshua Cody “Lil Miz” Young, 20, of 116 Duke Avenue, Columbia, turned himself in to fugitive investigators at about 12 p.m. on Tuesday at the offices of The Giese Law Firm at 1315 Blanding Street, Columbia. Young turned himself in on arrest warrants on charges of murder, first-degree burglary and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Young is represented by attorney Justin M. Kata.

Young was being held on Tuesday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing, Metts said. Under South Carolina law, a circuit judge would have to conduct a bond hearing for Young in general sessions court because murder carries a punishment of life in prison. The 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office has not yet scheduled a bond hearing for Young.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 3:55 p.m. on Monday Young, who was armed with a 9-mm Beretta 9000-S handgun, did willfully, unlawfully, feloniously and with malice aforethought shoot and mortally wound Shane Diquan Brooks, 19, after Young broke into Brooks’ home at 121 March Road, Metts said. Lexington County Emergency Medical Services personnel transported Brooks by ambulance to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, where Brooks was pronounced deceased on Monday evening.

Arrest warrants further allege that a witness told detectives that Young forcibly entered Brooks’ home through a door at the rear of the residence while Young was armed with the 9-mm Beretta handgun, which detectives later recovered, Metts said. The witness told detectives that Young engaged Brooks in a physical fight. The witness told detectives that Brooks suffered one gunshot wound in his upper left leg during the physical fight with Young.

In addition, arrest warrants allege that the witness knows Young and positively identified Young as the man who shot and mortally wounded Brooks, who was acquainted with Young, Metts said. It appears that the burglary at Brooks’ home and the fatal shooting of Brooks were not random acts.

Young ran away from Brooks’ home after he shot and mortally wounded Brooks, Metts said. The circumstances of the shooting and the motive for the burglary at Brooks’ home remain under investigation.

Metts asked anyone with information about the fatal shooting of Brooks to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
