School Resource Officer Arrests Four Persons in Thefts of Tablet Computers at High School

A Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy who works full-time as a school resource officer at Irmo High School arrested four males in connection with the thefts of 20 iPad and iPad Mini tablet computers worth about $8,000 that were reported stolen by students at the high school between September 12 and October 17. The school resource officer recovered the tablet computers that had been reported stolen.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Irmo High School Resource Officer Len Wilkerson arrested Shaolin Unique Burgess, 17, of 137 Bridgewater Circle, Irmo, on October 21 on an arrest warrant on a charge of petit larceny. Burgess was released from the Lexington County Detention Center on October 22 after Burgess posted bail. At the time of his arrest, Burgess was a student at Dutch Fork High School.

Wilkerson arrested Andrew Josef Hamilton, 18, of 341 Tram Road, Columbia, on October 21 on an arrest warrant on a charge of receiving stolen goods, Metts said. Hamilton was released from the county Detention Center on October 21 after Hamilton posted bail. At the time of his arrest, Hamilton was a student at Irmo High.

Wilkerson arrested Lamont Antonio Jennings, 18, of 3725 Harrogate Road, Columbia, on October 22 on arrest warrants on four counts of receiving stolen goods, Metts said. Jennings was being held on Thursday, October 31 at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $6,390. At the time of his arrest, Jennings was a student at Irmo High.

Wilkerson arrested Kendrick Allan Thompson, 22, of 5324 Bush River Road, Apartment 17, Columbia, on October 24 on an arrest warrant on a charge of receiving stolen goods, Metts said. Thompson was released from the county Detention Center on October 25 after posting a $2,130 bond.

The iPads and iPad Minis that were reported stolen at Irmo High were sold at ATM machines at two Columbia area shopping malls that enable customers to deposit electronic items for sale and receive cash payments for the items at the ATM machines, Metts said. Each stolen tablet computer was sold for $144 and shipped to a storage facility in San Diego, Calif. that is operated by the person who owns the ATM machines. The owner of the ATM machines cooperated fully with the Sheriff’s Department in recovering the stolen iPads and iPad Minis.

An arrest warrant alleges that on October 11 Burgess stole an iPad from one book bag at Irmo High without the permission of the student who owned the book bag, Metts said. Burgess placed the stolen iPad in his own book bag with the intent to deprive the student of the iPad.

An arrest warrant also alleges that on September 25 Hamilton sold an iPad Mini that had been reported stolen at Irmo High at an ATM machine at a shopping mall, Metts said.

In addition, arrest warrants allege that on September 25 and September 27 Jennings sold three iPad Minis that had been reported stolen at Irmo High at an ATM machine at a shopping mall, Metts said. An arrest warrant also alleges that on October 4 while on the grounds of Irmo High Jennings possessed an iPad Mini that had been reported stolen at the high school.

An arrest warrant further alleges that on September 29 Thompson sold an iPad Mini that had been reported stolen at Irmo High at an ATM machine at a shopping mall, Metts said.

Wilkerson is searching for Jaqualle Dejevoid Jacobs, 17, who does not have a permanent address, Metts said. Jacobs is wanted on an arrest warrant on a charge of petit larceny. Jacobs, who is African-American, is 5-foot-10 and weighs 130 pounds. Jacobs has brown hair and brown eyes.

An arrest warrant alleges that on October 17 Jacobs removed a fellow male student’s iPad Mini at Irmo High and concealed the tablet computer on his person with the intent to deprive the male student of his tablet computer, Metts said.

Metts said the case remains under investigation. The sheriff asked anyone with information concerning Jacobs, Jacobs’ whereabouts or thefts of tablet computers or other electronic devices at Irmo High to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com), Metts said.
