Businesses Donate Money to Buy Radar Unit

Five businesses donated a total of $1,551.50 to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation to buy one dual-purpose, speed-detection device that has been issued to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department resident deputy for the Dixiana community.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said the MPH Speedgun Pro radar unit is utilized by Dixiana Resident Deputy Shannon Dykes. Dykes can use the radar unit as a hand-held device or temporarily mount the radar unit in his marked patrol car.

Dykes utilizes the radar unit to enforce the posted speed limit for streets in residential neighborhoods where citizens have expressed concerns about traffic safety, Metts said. Dykes also utilizes the radar unit to enforce the posted speed limit for streets in areas that are hot spots for criminal activity. In addition, Dykes utilizes the radar unit when the Sheriff’s Department conducts public safety checkpoints.

Metts said U.S. Silica, Dixiana Steel Co., Columbia Silica, Lane Construction and Becker Complete Compactor donated a combined total of $1,551.50 to the Sheriff’s Foundation to buy the radar unit. The Sheriff’s Foundation is a nonprofit group that pays for equipment, training and other items that the Sheriff’s Department has difficulty acquiring through the normal governmental budget process.

The purchase and deployment of the radar unit will enhance Dykes’ ability to fulfill the Sheriff’s Department mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
