Man Arrested for Stealing Dog from Adoption Center

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives arrested a 59-year-old Eutawville man on Wednesday, October 23 on a charge that the man stole a 4-year-old female tri-color, black-brown-and-white chihuahua named Pixie Trixie from an animal adoption center on Orchard Drive near West Columbia on October 10. The dog later was returned to the animal adoption center.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Curtis Roosevelt Davis, 59, of 196 Yearling Drive, Eutawville, turned himself in to detectives on Wednesday afternoon on an arrest warrant on a charge of petit larceny. Davis was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center at 12:26 p.m. on Wednesday. Davis was being held on Wednesday at the county Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

The arrest warrant alleges that at about 4 p.m. on October 10 Davis unlawfully took possession of Pixie Trixie for his own personal gain without the permission of Pets, Inc. at 300 Orchard Drive or employees of the animal adoption center, Metts said. A witness positively identified Davis as the man who stole Pixie Trixie, who was worth about $250, from the animal adoption center. A CrimeStoppers tip helped detectives develop sufficient probable cause to obtain the arrest warrant for Davis.

An employee at Pets, Inc. reported the theft of Pixie Trixie to the Sheriff’s Department at about 5:28 p.m. on October 10, Metts said. The employee told deputies that Davis, who was accompanied by a 14-year-old girl, entered the animal adoption center at about 4 p.m. on October 10 and walked around the center in order to look at various dogs that are housed at the center.

The animal adoption center employee told deputies that the 14-year-old girl talked on her cellular telephone the entire time that she was at the center and did not interact with employees, Metts said. The 14-year-old girl had no involvement in the theft of Pixie Trixie and will not be charged. Davis is a friend of the girl’s family.

The animal adoption center employee told deputies that Davis asked to take Pixie Trixie for a short walk on a leash so that he could get to know the dog, Metts said. The employee told deputies that Davis walked Pixie Trixie outside the building and then drove off with the dog and the 14-year-old girl in his motor vehicle.
