Man Arrested for Possessing Stolen All-Terrain Vehicle

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Wednesday, October 2 arrested a 52-year-old West Columbia man on a charge that the man possessed an all-terrain vehicle that had been reported stolen to the Sheriff’s Department.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Michael Todd Williams, 52, of 146 April Road, West Columbia, on an arrest warrant on a charge of receiving stolen goods. Williams was being held on Wednesday at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.

An arrest warrant alleges that on September 16 detectives found that Williams possessed one 2013 CF Moto X-500 all-terrain vehicle worth about $5,000 that was stolen on August 28 from outside a home on Savannah Highway near Swansea, Metts said. Williams had reason to believe that the vehicle was stolen when Williams bought the vehicle for considerably less than its market value. In addition, Williams tried to repair the vehicle’s ignition system, which was damaged when the persons who stole the vehicle started the vehicle by hotwiring the vehicle.

On Monday, September 30, detectives arrested Robert Daniel Davis, Jr., 51, of 1343 Savannah Highway, Swansea, on an arrest warrant on a charge of grand larceny in connection with the theft of the all-terrain vehicle. Davis was released from the county Detention Center on Tuesday, October 1 after posting a $5,000 bond.

An arrest warrant alleges that on August 28 Davis and Gene Carroll “Fuzzy” Rutland, Jr., stole the 2013 CF Moto X-500 all-terrain vehicle from a home that is near Davis’ home on Savannah Highway, Metts said. Davis and Rutland pushed the vehicle away from the home, hotwired the vehicle in order to start the vehicle and then drove the vehicle away.

On September 20, detectives arrested Rutland, 31, of 117 Minolta Drive, West Columbia, on charges that Rutland stole two all-terrain vehicles, one golf cart, one fishing boat, one chainsaw, one video camera, farm equipment and scrap metal worth a combined total of about $25,600 during a property crime spree that occurred between May 21 and September 5, Metts said. Rutland was being held on Wednesday at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $50,000.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Davis, Rutland or Williams to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
