Halloween Trail of Treats

In three weeks, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will conduct its fifth annual Trail of Treats for Halloween between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 26 at Wildcat Hollow stadium on Ballpark Road near Lexington. The Trail of Treats is a family-oriented event that is intended to allow children to celebrate Halloween in a safe and secure environment.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts encourages parents and legal guardians to bring their children to the event. Admission is $1 per child. Children who are age 12 and younger will be able to collect candy free of charge at each motor vehicle or piece of equipment that is decorated with a Halloween theme along the Trail of Treats inside the stadium.

All proceeds from the Trail of Treats will benefit the Dickerson Center for Children in West Columbia, Metts said. The Dickerson Center is a non-profit child advocacy center that assists law enforcement officers by conducting forensic interviews and forensic medical examinations for children age 18 and younger who were physically abused or sexually abused. The center also provides mental health and victims services to children who have been abused.

The Trail of Treats will feature entries from the Sheriff’s Department, public safety agencies, businesses and community groups, Metts said. Businesses and community groups that are interested in entering the event free of charge are asked to call Lori Drafts with the Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-2557 or contact Drafts via email at The deadline for placing an entry in the Trail of Treats is Friday, October 18.

Each motor vehicle or piece of equipment that is entered in the Trail of Treats should be decorated with a tasteful Halloween theme, Metts said. Each business or community group is asked to provide enough candy for about 3,000 children to each get at least one piece of candy.

Sheriff’s Department employees will use a Halloween theme to decorate patrol cars and other law enforcement equipment as part of a trunk or treat competition, Metts said. Local businesses also will decorate work vehicles in a Halloween theme for the competition.

Law enforcement demonstrations will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. during the Trail of Treats, Metts said. The event also will include a puppet show and static displays of the Sheriff’s Department helicopter, an armored vehicle that is used by the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), a robot and truck that are used by hazardous device technicians and fire trucks. In addition, children will be able to pet animals at a petting zoo, play carnival games and fish at a trailer that the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will operate.

The Trail of Treats reflects the Sheriff’s Department mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
