Officers Seize Methamphetamine Laboratory

Officers with the Lexington County Multi-Agency Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) on Monday, September 23 seized a methamphetamine laboratory that had been operated at a home on Two Notch Road near Lexington. Officers also arrested a 38-year-old Lexington man on charges that the man operated the methamphetamine laboratory.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said NET officers arrested Deandre Malcolm Black, 38, of 112 YMCA Road, Lexington, on a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine. Deputies also detained Black on a family court bench warrant that was issued after Black failed to make court-ordered child support payments in Greenville County. Black was being held on Tuesday, September 24 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

At about 10:23 p.m. on Monday, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies went to the home at 1320 Two Notch Road in order to investigate information that a methamphetamine laboratory was being operated at the residence, Metts said. Deputies detected a strong chemical odor outside the home that they recognized from training that they had received as an indication that a methamphetamine laboratory had been operated at the residence.

Deputies saw Black place an object in a black bag while Black was standing on a porch on the side of the Two Notch Road home, Metts said. Black ran away from the residence through the home’s back yard as deputies approached the home.

Deputies found one reaction vessel, which actively was being used to manufacture methamphetamine, on the ground by a fence in the home’s back yard, Metts said.

In addition, deputies found two black bags by the fence in the home’s back yard that contained bottles that could be used as reaction vessels to manufacture methamphetamine, Metts said. Deputies also found one cellular telephone on the ground by the fence.

Deputies located Black in woods off Concrete Road and placed Black in investigative detention, Metts said. Deputies requested assistance from NET officers to further investigate the incident.

NET officers determined that Black used the reaction vessel to manufacture methamphetamine and arrested Black, Metts said. NET officers dismantled and safely disposed of the reaction vessel.

While searching Black’s person incident to his arrest, officers found one plastic bag in Black’s possession that contained 60 tablets of an over-the-counter medication that contains pseudoephedrine, Metts said. Deputies also found that Black possessed a tool that is used to crush medications that are in a pill form as well as an electronic scale for weighing items.

Deputies found one small glass pipe, two clear glass tubes, one bag of coffee filters, one lighter and work gloves on the porch on the side of the Two Notch Road home, Metts said. It appeared that the reaction vessel had been stored on the porch while the vessel actively was being used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal drug activity in Lexington County to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).

NET is comprised of officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Batesburg-Leesville Police Department and Lexington Police Department, Metts said. The sheriff and municipal police chiefs implemented NET in 2001 in order to enhance drug enforcement in Lexington County.
