Sheriff Promotes Seven Deputies


Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts promoted four Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies to serve as school resource officers, one deputy to serve as a resident deputy, one investigator to work in the Criminal Intelligence Unit and one deputy to work in the K-9 Unit.

Metts promoted Stephen “Steve” Baumgardner, 54, of Columbia, to serve as a school resource officer at CrossRoads Middle School near Irmo. Baumgardner previously served as a white-collar crime investigator. On August 4, 1997, Metts appointed Baumgardner to serve as a deputy.

Metts promoted Johnnie Nesbitt, 42, of Pelion, to serve as a school resource officer at Gilbert Middle School. Nesbitt previously served as a resident deputy in the Boiling Springs and Fairview communities. On January 7, 2002, Metts appointed Nesbitt to serve as a deputy.

Metts promoted Kevin O’Dell, 48, of Chapin, to serve as a school resource officer at Leaphart Elementary School near Irmo. O’Dell previously served as a deputy on a road patrol shift in the South Region Patrol District, which is based in Pelion. On April 5, 2004, Metts appointed O’Dell to serve as a deputy.

Metts promoted James Stokes, 28, of Lexington, to serve as a school resource officer at White Knoll High School near Lexington. Stokes previously served as a deputy on a road patrol shift in the North Region Patrol District, which is based near Irmo. On January 9, 2012, Metts appointed Stokes to serve as a deputy.

Metts promoted Jeremiah Adam Spires, 35, of West Columbia, to serve as the resident deputy in the West Columbia community. Spires previously served as a deputy on a road patrol shift in the West Region Patrol District, which is based near Gilbert. On November 13, 2012, Metts appointed Spires to serve as a deputy.

Metts promoted Brian Travis, 31, of Columbia, to serve as an investigator in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. Travis previously served as an investigator in the Major Crimes Unit. On May 7, 2007, Metts appointed Travis to serve as a deputy.

Metts promoted John Matthew Padula, 31, of Irmo, to serve as a deputy in the K-9 Unit. Padula previously served as a deputy on a road patrol shift in the North Region Patrol District. On May 28, 2012, Metts appointed Padula to serve as a deputy.
