Teen-Ager Raises Money to Donate Body Armor Vest for K-9 Police Dog

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts recognized Heroes Vest Fund, Inc., and Leeam Stein, 14, of Lexington, for raising money to donate a body armor vest for Lexington County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Forrest, a man tracking bloodhound who was donated to the Sheriff’s Department in 2012. Forrest is the partner of K-9 Unit Deputy Nick Parker.

Heroes Vest Fund, a Lexington-based non-profit group, donated the body armor vest for K-9 Forrest, Metts said. Stein raised money for Heroes Vest Fund to buy the custom-made body armor vest, which cost $2,300, as part of a community service project for Stein’s Bar Mitzvah. Stein is the son of Sheriff’s Department Reserve Deputy David Stein.

Metts presented a certificate of appreciation to Leeam Stein during a quarterly Sheriff’s Department employee awards ceremony that the sheriff conducted on August 8.

Elaine Henderson founded Heroes Vest Fund with the intent to provide body armor vests for all K-9 police dogs that work with law enforcement agencies in South Carolina, Metts said. In order to raise money to buy the body armor vests, Henderson organized the creation of a calendar in 2011 that featured deputies and police dogs with the Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit. Henderson also organized a bass fishing tournament and Vest Fest music festival.

“Deputies with our agency’s K-9 Unit greatly appreciate Leeam and Elaine and all the citizens who helped Leeam by donating money to his community service project,” Metts said.

Heroes Vest Fund has donated body armor vests for all K-9 police dogs in the Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit, Metts said. Citizens who would like to make a donation to Heroes Vest Fund can do so via its website (www.heroesvestfund.org), Henderson said.
