Sheriff James R. Metts

Major John Allard, PIO Office, 785-2415, 24-Hour Press Box: 799-2001, Ext. 1100

Employees of the Quarter

Melissa Taylor Sandra Fulmer Ryan Mosely

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts recognized Deputy Ryan Moseley as the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2013. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Advisory Council selected Moseley for the honor.

In addition to recognizing Moseley as the Employee of the Quarter, Metts presented Moseley, 23, of Lexington, with the Sheriff’s Department Life Saving Award in recognition of Moseley’s actions on May 13, when Moseley saw flames on the front porch of a house on Windy Road while Moseley patrolled the Gilbert community in his marked patrol car. Moseley received the award during a quarterly employee awards ceremony that Metts conducted on Thursday, August 8. On August 6, 2012, Metts appointed Moseley to serve as a deputy in the West Region Patrol District, which is based near Gilbert.

At about 9:06 a.m. on May 13, Moseley saw the house on fire more than 100 yards off Windy Road, Metts said. Moseley activated the emergency equipment on his marked patrol car, parked his car outside the home and requested assistance from the Lexington County Fire Service.

Moseley found that flames reached the ceiling on the front porch and had consumed vinyl siding on the exterior of the home, Metts said. Moseley loudly knocked on the front door in order to alert anyone inside the home to the fire. A 19-year-old woman and two dogs ran out of the rear of the residence. The woman told Moseley that she had been asleep and did not know that the home was on fire. The woman lives at the residence with her parents, who were not home.

After he verified that no one else was in the home, Moseley used a garden hose at the home to contain and extinguish the fire, Metts said. The woman and her dogs were not injured.

“Ryan saved the life of the 19-year-old woman and her two dogs by being very observant while he was on road patrol,” Metts said. “Ryan reacted quickly and selflessly when he saw that the home was on fire and placed himself in danger in order to save another person’s life.”

During the employee awards ceremony, Metts also recognized Melissa Taylor, 25, of Leesville as the Civilian Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2013. Taylor serves as a paralegal for the Sheriff’s Department general counsel and administrative assistant for the Professional Standards Division. On December 12, 2011, Metts appointed Taylor to serve as a paralegal and administrative assistant.

“Melissa is a professional who has superior customer service skills. Melissa performs like a bloodhound in finding legal references and accomplishing legal research,” Metts said. “Melissa deals effectively with citizens who are upset and smiles in the face of adversity.”

Taylor actively participates in community service events, such as Camp Kemo, Relay for Life, and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Metts said.

In addition, Metts presented the Sheriff’s Medal, which is the highest law enforcement honor that the sheriff can bestow, to Sandra Fulmer, 69, of Lexington, who retired on May 9 after working 10 years in the Warrant Division.

“Sandra always could be counted on to do her job in a thorough manner,” Metts said. “Sandra was very professional in her approach to her job and was dedicated to serving the citizens of Lexington County.”
