Two Men and One Boy Arrested and Arrest Warrants Obtained for One Additional Man in Convenience Store Robberies

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives in cooperation with the Lexington Police Department, Columbia Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service arrested an 18-year-old Columbia man in connection with a June 23 robbery at a convenience store on Augusta Road near West Columbia.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts and Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green said sheriff’s detectives and Lexington police detectives also arrested a 24-year-old Columbia man and 16-year-old Columbia boy and obtained arrest warrants for a second 18-year-old Columbia man in connection with three robberies that occurred on May 23, July 8 and July 12 at three convenience stores on Augusta Road and Sunset Boulevard near West Columbia and Augusta Road in the town of Lexington. The two 18-year-old Columbia men, 24-year-old Columbia man and 16-year-old Columbia boy are members of the Bloods criminal gang.

In each robbery, the men covered their faces with cloths or masks in order to conceal their identities, Metts and Green said. The robbers ran in the stores, forced clerks to open cash registers and stole an undetermined amount of money, tobacco products and beer before driving off. The robbers targeted convenience stores that are open 24 hours a day on Augusta Road and Sunset Boulevard in the Lexington and West Columbia communities.

Metts and District of South Carolina U.S. Marshal Kelvin Washington said sheriff’s detectives, members of a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force and Columbia Police Department officers arrested Rayjon “Savage” Smith, 18, of 2202 Bailey Street, Columbia, on Tuesday, July 23 after receiving a CrimeStoppers tip concerning Smith’s whereabouts.

Investigators arrested Smith at 100 Lorick Circle, Columbia, on arrest warrants on charges of armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and criminal conspiracy in connection with the robbery at about 2 a.m. on June 23 at the Circle K convenience store, 2308 Augusta Road, West Columbia, Metts said. Smith was being held on Thursday, July 25 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $300,000.

Sheriff’s detectives and members of the fugitive task force also took custody of the 16-year-old boy in connection with the convenience store robberies, Metts said. The boy was being held on Thursday at a South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice pre-trial detention facility.

“Law enforcement partnerships are the most important tool that we have when tracking wanted fugitives,” Washington said. “Without the combined efforts of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington Police Department, Columbia Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service task force, these fugitives could still be terrorizing the Lexington and West Columbia communities. Operation Intercept strives to assist law enforcement agencies, and these apprehensions have again proven fruitful when we combine our resources for the same goal.”

Detectives on Thursday served Travis Josiah Bromell, 24, of 3818 Grand Street, Columbia, with arrest warrants on four counts of armed robbery, four counts of possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, four counts of criminal conspiracy and two counts of kidnapping, Metts and Green said.

Bromell was charged in the June 23 robbery at the Circle K convenience store; a robbery at about 2 a.m. on May 23 at a Pitt Stop convenience store, 3809 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia; a robbery at about 3 a.m. on July 8 at a Kangaroo Express convenience store at 3950 Augusta Road, West Columbia; and a robbery at about 4 a.m. on July 12 at a Murphy Express convenience store at 4873 Augusta Road, Lexington, Metts and Green said.

Bromell was being held on Thursday at the Lexington County Detention Center, Metts and Green said. Bromell is scheduled to appear in court at 3 p.m. on Thursday for a bond hearing. The hearing will be conducted at a courtroom that is adjacent to the front entrance of the county Detention Center at 521 Gibson Road in Lexington.

Detectives also obtained arrest warrants for Antwon Jamal “Twain” Brown, 18, of 1717 Washington Street, Columbia, on three counts of armed robbery, three counts of possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, three counts of criminal conspiracy and two counts of kidnapping, Metts and Green said.

Brown faces charges in connection with the June 23 robbery at the Circle K convenience store, the July 8 robbery at the Kangaroo Express convenience store and the July 12 robbery at the Murphy Express convenience store, Metts and Green said. Brown was being held on Thursday at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center near Columbia on unrelated charges.
