Explorers Post Cadets Win Awards in 10 Categories

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post #106 cadets won awards in 10 individual and team categories during the 2013 South Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers competition, which was held earlier this month in Clemson.

“I am very proud of awards that the Explorers Post cadets won during the Law Enforcement Explorers competition,” Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said. “The cadets take their service with the Explorers Post very seriously. They regularly conduct training with full-time sheriff’s deputies, who serve as advisors for the Explorers Post.”

Metts said Explorers Post cadets won awards in the following five individual categories:

Collision Report Writing: Mike Medlin, first place

Incident Report Writing: Mike Medlin, first place

Legals Test: David Keith, first place, and Bryan Allen, third place

Driving: Matt Hagins, second place

Pistol Shooting: David Keith, second place

Metts said the Explorers Post won awards in the following five team categories:

Pistol Shooting: First place

Fight in Progress: First place

Crisis Intervention: First place

Officer Down and Active Shooter: Third place

Overall Team Competition: Third place

Metts said the following Explorers Post cadets participated in the competition: Bryan Allen, 20, of Lexington; David Keith, 20, of Lexington; Mike Medlin, 21, of Cayce; Chris Kimball, 18, of West Columbia; Joey Ragsdale, 17, of Lexington; Matt Hagins, 20, of West Columbia; and John Cormany, 20, of Lexington.

The Explorers Post has served as an excellent recruitment tool for the Sheriff’s Department, Metts said. Over the years, Metts has hired many former Explorers Post cadets to work as full-time deputies. The program provides excellent training and personal development for teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement.

Members of the Explorers Post create fingerprint identification cards for children so that children can be readily identified in the event that they are reported missing, Metts said. They also direct traffic at various businesses during the busy Christmas holiday shopping season.

Metts encourages teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement to join the Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post. To be eligible, you must be ages 14 to 20, with a clean criminal record. You must be enrolled in school and maintain a “C” grade average. Citizens who want additional information about the Explorers Post should contact Sheriff’s Department Lt. Alan Driggers at (803) 785-2581 or via e-mail at adriggers@lcsd.sc.gov.
