Fugitive Returned to Lexington County

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department fugitive investigators on Tuesday, May 7 returned a 35-year-old Gaston man to Lexington County from West Virginia, where members of a U.S. Marshals Service regional fugitive task force arrested the man on April 26 near Peytona, W. Va.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said fugitive investigators brought James Christopher Shawver, 35, of 125 Tamara Lane, Gaston, to the Lexington County Detention Center, where Shawver was booked at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Shawver was being held on Tuesday at the county Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Sheriff’s Department detectives obtained arrest warrants for Shawver on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping in connection with an incident in which Shawver cut his wife on her arms and neck with a box cutter on April 18 at the couple’s Tamara Lane home, Metts said.

Shawver is scheduled to appear in court for a first-appearance hearing at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, Metts said. During the hearing, a Lexington County magistrate formally will advise Shawver about the charges filed against him as well as Shawver’s legal rights.

Under South Carolina law, a circuit judge would have to conduct a bond hearing for Shawver in general sessions court because attempted murder and kidnapping each carry a maximum punishment of 30 years in prison, Metts said. The 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office has not yet scheduled a bond hearing for Shawver.

Shawver waived extradition to South Carolina, Metts said. Fugitive investigators transported Shawver to Lexington County from the West Virginia Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden, W. Va.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 9:20 p.m. on April 18 Shawver assaulted his 28-year-old wife, Kristen Lynn Shawver, inside and outside their home on Tamara Lane, Metts said. James Shawver used a box cutter to cut his wife with the intent to kill her.

During a verbal dispute, arrest warrants also allege that James Shawver cut his wife on her arms with a box cutter while the couple was inside their home, Metts said. Kristen Shawver then ran out of the home.

In addition, arrest warrants allege that James Shawver ran after his wife and dragged her by her hair into woods, where James Shawver stated that he intended to kill his wife, Metts said. Kristen Shawver escaped from her husband for a second time and ran away.

Arrest warrants further allege that James Shawver caught his wife for a second time, stabbed her in her neck with the box cutter, dragged her by her hair and forced his wife into the couple’s blue 2007 Chevrolet Aveo sedan, Metts said. James Shawver forced Kristen Shawver to ride with him in the car.

Arrest warrants also allege that Kristen Shawver jumped out of the car as James Shawver drove the car on Tamara Lane, Metts said. Kristen Shawver sought help at a neighbor’s home.

Kristen Shawver suffered more than 20 wounds to her arms and her upper torso, including her head and neck, Metts said. Kristen Shawver was taken to a hospital, where Kristen Shawver received medical treatment for her injuries and later was released on Thursday, April 25.

Deputies later recovered the Chevrolet Aveo sedan in a ditch off Pooles Mill Road near Swansea, Metts said. No one was in the car. Deputies found blood on the inside and exterior of the car. Deputies also found a box cutter on the floor of the driver’s compartment in the car.
