Man Arrested for Communicating Bomb Threat

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives assisted the Prince William County (Va.) Police Department in developing information that led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man on Tuesday, April 23 in Bristow, Va., in connection with the communication of a bomb threat on Monday, April 22 at White Knoll High School on Platt Springs Road near Lexington, S.C.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Loudon County (Va.) Police Department developed information that Tyler Hering, 20, of 12503 Heykens Lane, Bristow, Va., was involved in communicating the bomb threat at White Knoll High School. Detectives provided that information to Prince William County (Va.) Police Department detectives because Hering lives in Prince William County.

Prince William County Police Department detectives executed a search warrant at Hering’s home in Bristow, Va. on Tuesday and developed probable cause to arrest Hering on a state charge in Virginia of communicating a threat to bomb a place of assembly or building, Metts said. Under Virginia law, the charge is a felony.

Hering was being held without bond on Wednesday, April 24 at the Prince William County (Va.) Adult Detention Center, Metts said.

Questions concerning the charge filed against Hering should be addressed to Prince William County Police Department Public Information Officer Jonathan L. Perok, Metts said. Perok can be reached at his office at (703) 792-4159 or via email at jperok@pwcgov.org.

Hering will not face charges in Lexington County because Hering communicated the bomb threat from his home in Virginia, Metts said.

It appears that Hering randomly selected to communicate the bomb threat at White Knoll High School, Metts said. Hering does not have any established ties to White Knoll High School or anyone in the Lexington community or any other community in South Carolina.

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies in cooperation with Lexington County School District One searched all buildings at White Knoll High School on Monday and did not find any items on school grounds that posed a threat to students, faculty or staff at the school, Metts said.
