Sheriff James R. Metts

Major John Allard, PIO Office, 785-2415, 24-Hour Press Box: 799-2001, Ext. 1100

Detectives Arrest Man in Fatal Shooting

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Wednesday, March 13 arrested a 19-year-old Lexington man on charges that the man used a shotgun to shoot and kill a 56-year-old man, firing one shotgun round through a glass window from the exterior of the 56-year-old man’s home on Emma Drive near Lexington.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives arrested Jeffrey O’Neal Kight, Jr., 19, of 111 Emma Drive, Lexington, on arrest warrants on charges of murder and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Kight was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center at 11:48 p.m. on Wednesday after detectives completed an interview with Kight concerning the fatal shooting. Kight was being held on Thursday, March 14 at the county Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Under South Carolina law, a circuit judge would have to conduct a bond hearing for Kight in general sessions court because murder carries a punishment of life in prison, Metts said. The 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office has not yet scheduled a bond hearing for Kight.

Arrest warrants allege that Kight acted with malice and aforethought at about 6:49 a.m. on Wednesday, when Kight fatally shot William Rush Falls, 56, while Falls was standing in the kitchen at Falls’ home at 115 Emma Drive, Lexington, Metts said. Kight fired one round from a shotgun while standing outside Falls’ home in front of a glass window on the side of the residence. The shotgun round penetrated the glass window and struck Falls in his neck and face.

A surveillance camera system that Falls had installed outside his home showed that Kight was standing in the backyard of Falls’ home at about 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Metts said.

The surveillance camera system at Falls’ home also showed that Kight was standing at about 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday at the side window outside Falls’ home shortly before the shotgun was fired from that location, killing Falls, Metts said.

After executing a search warrant at Kight’s home, detectives found one shotgun and one expended shotgun shell in Kight’s bedroom, Metts said. Ballistics tests will be conducted in order to determine whether the shotgun was used in the fatal shooting of Falls.

Metts said the motive for the fatal shooting remains under investigation. The sheriff asked anyone with information about Kight or the fatal shooting of Falls to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
