Three Dead-Beat Dads Arrested

Vernon Caldwell, III Johnny Adrian Peake Clint Michael Sawyer

In separate investigations, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department fugitive investigators arrested a 37-year-old Columbia man, 40-year-old West Columbia man and 47-year-old West Columbia man who were wanted on family court bench warrants that were issued after the three men did not make a combined total of more than $136,000 in unpaid, court-ordered child support payments in Lexington County.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said investigators arrested Vernon Caldwell, III, 37, of 1729 Grays Inn Road, Columbia; Johnny Adrian Peake, 40, of 404 Conifer Circle, West Columbia; and Clint Michael Sawyer, 47, of 528 Woodberry Drive, West Columbia. Caldwell, Peake and Sawyer each were being held on Friday, November 6 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting hearings in family court to resolve their Lexington County child support cases.

Investigators arrested Caldwell at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 5 at Caldwell’s home, Metts said. Investigators found Caldwell sitting on a couch in his home’s den.

Investigators arrested Peake at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday at Peake’s home, Metts said. Investigators found Peake sitting on the front porch at his home.

Investigators arrested Sawyer at 10 p.m. on Thursday at Sawyer’s home, Metts said. Investigators found Sawyer hiding behind a door in a bedroom at the rear of Sawyer’s home.

So far this year, Lexington County sheriff’s fugitive investigators have arrested 96 habitual offenders who did not make a combined total of more than $2.5 million in court-ordered child support payments in Lexington County, Metts said.

Lexington County Clerk of Court Beth Carrigg said a family court judge issued two bench warrants for Caldwell’s arrest on February 13 after Caldwell did not make court-ordered child support payments totaling $55,797 in Lexington County. A family court judge issued a bench warrant for Peake’s arrest on September 23 after Peake did not make court-ordered child support payments totaling $16,541 in Lexington County. A family court judge issued a bench warrant for Sawyer’s arrest on November 4 after Sawyer did not make court-ordered child support payments totaling $64,194 in Lexington County.

So far this year, fugitive investigators have served more than 481 family court bench warrants on dead-beat parents who have not made court-ordered child support payments in Lexington County, Metts said. In 2008, investigators served 668 family court bench warrants on persons who did not make court-ordered child support payments in Lexington County.

Non-custodial parents who owe court-ordered child support payments in Lexington County can make arrangements to resolve family court bench warrants that have been issued for their arrests by calling the Clerk of Court’s Office at (803) 785-1196, Carrigg said.

Non-custodial parents who are wanted on family court bench warrants also can surrender at the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington, Metts said.
