 Air Quality

Air pollution is generated by a variety of sources.  Vehicle and industry emissions, dust particles, gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment and outdoor burning all contribute to air pollution.  cloudy sky

Everyone contributes to air pollution in some way or another, but everyone can also be a part of the solution.

Lexington County government wants to be part of the solution by supporting

programs and initiatives aimed at improving air quality.   For example:

  • The County has implemented an Air Quality Policy to reduce its own contribution to air pollution.
  • The County is a founding member of the Regional Air Quality Forum; a collaboration between Richland and Lexington Counties, the Central Midlands Council of Governments, the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce and other municipal, business, industry and organizational stakeholders in the area.
  • The County has supported special events to improve air quality such as the Richland-Lexington Lawn Mower Exchange (winner of the 2008 National Association of Counties Achievement Award), Car Care Vehicle Maintenance Checks and the 2007 Climate Protection Action Committee Green is Good for Business Conference.
