Investigators Arrest Three Additional Persons for Illegally Operating Gaming House


Lexington County Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents arrested a 39-year-old Lexington woman, 61-year-old Lexington man and 54-year-old woman on charges that the two women and one man illegally operated a gaming house at a home on Fields Lane near Lexington. Investigators seized eight illegal video gambling devices that the two women and one man operated at the home. Investigators previously arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the illegal gaming house.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said Stacy Joyce Erickson, 39, of 118 South Hampton Road, Lexington, turned herself in on Friday, July 4 on arrest warrants on three counts of unlawfully possessing a video gambling device and one count of operating a gaming house. Erickson was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center at 7:14 a.m. on Friday and released from the Detention Center on Friday after Erickson posted bail totaling $4,000.

James Frederick Freeland, Jr., 61, of 217-B Fields Lane, Lexington, turned himself in on Friday on arrest warrants on three counts of unlawfully possessing a video gambling device and one count of operating a gaming house, McCarty said. Freeland was booked at the county Detention Center at 7:45 a.m. on Friday and released from the Detention Center on Friday after Freeland posted bail totaling $4,000.

Brunelle Speaks Pace, 54, who does not a permanent address, turned herself in on Friday on arrest warrants on three counts of unlawfully possessing a video gambling device and one count of operating a gaming house, McCarty said.

Pace was booked at the county Detention Center at 7:23 a.m. on Friday and released from the Detention Center on Friday after Pace posted bail totaling $4,000, McCarty said.

Arrest warrants allege that on Wednesday, July 2 sheriff’s narcotics investigators and SLED agents executed a search warrant at Freeland’s home on Fields Lane, McCarty said. Investigators found that Erickson, Freeland, Pace and Gregory Speaks, 44, unlawfully possessed eight illegal video gambling devices that were operated at Freeland’s home.

On Thursday, July 3 a Lexington County magistrate ruled that each of the eight Pot-O-Gold-type tabletop video poker devices found at Freeland’s home were illegal video gambling devices, which were subject to seizure by law enforcement officers, McCarty said. Under South Carolina law, a magistrate must determine whether each individual gambling device is illegal.

Speaks, who does not have a permanent address, turned himself in on Thursday on arrest warrants on eight counts of unlawfully possessing a video gambling device and one count of operating a gaming house, McCarty said. Speaks was released from the county Detention Center on Thursday after Speaks posted bail totaling $9,000.
