Man Wanted in Connection with Fatal Shooting Arrested

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives, on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 arrested a 20-year-old Columbia man who was wanted on arrest warrants in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on February 2 in the parking lot of a bar on Berryhill Road in the St. Andrews community.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives arrested Gregory Lamont Brooks, 20, of 727 Farrowood Drive, Columbia, on arrest warrants on charges of murder, unlawful possession of a handgun by a person who was convicted of a violent crime that is a felony and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 5:50 a.m. on February 2 Brooks acted with malice aforethought when he fatally shot Brandon E. Ratliff, 31, of 233 Brook Pines Drive, Columbia, with a handgun during a verbal dispute in the parking lot of the Cockpit Bar & Grill at 214 Berryhill Road, Metts said.

Arrest warrants further allege that multiple witnesses identified Brooks as the person who fatally shot Ratliff, Metts said. Brooks provided detectives with false information concerning his whereabouts at the time of the fatal shooting.

In addition, arrest warrants allege that Brooks was convicted of a violent crime that is a felony and violated South Carolina law by unlawfully possessing the handgun that Brooks used when he fatally shot Ratliff, Metts said.

Brooks fatally shot Ratliff while Ratliff tried to mediate a dispute that involved Brooks and several additional persons outside the Berryhill Road bar, Metts said. The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation. Detectives also are continuing to investigate the nature of the dispute that Ratliff was trying to mediate when Ratliff was shot once in his upper torso.

After he was fatally shot, Ratliff was transported in a privately owned motor vehicle to Lexington Medical Center, where Ratliff was pronounced dead, Metts said.
