Two Men Arrested in Shooting Incident

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Wednesday, April 9 arrested a 22-year-old man who lives in Little Mountain and a 20-year-old man who lives in Little Mountain in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 outside a home on Bayfield Lane near Chapin.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Jeffery Lewis Hentz, 22, of 318 Nursery Road, Little Mountain, turned himself in to detectives on an arrest warrant on a charge of attempted murder at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Chapin community. Detectives later booked Hentz at the Lexington County Detention Center, where Hentz was being held on Wednesday while awaiting a bond hearing.

Demichael Edward Mayers, 20, turned himself in to deputies with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office at his home at 318 Nursery Road, Little Mountain, at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday on an arrest warrant on a charge of attempted murder, Metts said. Lexington County deputies transported Mayers to the Lexington County Detention Center, where Mayers was being booked on Wednesday night.

Arrest warrants allege that on Tuesday Hentz and Mayers became involved in a verbal dispute with Antonio Williams, 34, of Prosperity, outside a home at 125 Bayfield Lane near Chapin, Metts said. Williams is acquainted with Hentz and Mayers, and the shooting incident does not appear to have been a random act.

Arrest warrants further allege that witnesses told detectives that Hentz and Mayers each were armed with firearms at the time of the verbal dispute with Williams, Metts said.

In addition, arrest warrants allege that during the verbal dispute, Mayers shot Williams with a firearm, causing great bodily injury to Williams in his upper torso, Metts said. Hentz and Mayers ran away from the home on Bayfield Lane after Williams was shot.

The nature and circumstances of the verbal dispute that involved Hentz, Mayers and Williams remain under investigation, Metts said.

Williams was transported by helicopter on Tuesday to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, where Williams successfully underwent surgery on Tuesday night, Metts said. Williams was listed in stable condition on Wednesday at the hospital.
