Arrest Warrant Obtained for Man in Home Break-In


Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives in cooperation with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department on Monday, April 7 obtained an arrest warrant for a 46-year-old West Columbia man in connection with a burglary that occurred on March 16 at a home that was under construction on Keegan Rock Court near Lexington.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives obtained an arrest warrant for James Edward Burgess, 46, of 4577 Midway Street, West Columbia, on a charge of second-degree burglary. Detectives will serve Burgess with the arrest warrant when Burgess is released from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where Burgess was being held on Monday on bail totaling $70,000 on charges that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department filed against Burgess.

An arrest warrant alleges that between 4:35 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. on March 16 Burgess unlawfully entered a home that was under construction at 255 Keegan Rock Court with the intent to commit a crime, Metts said. Burgess stole one General Electric slick-top stove worth $1,300 from the home, causing about $4,000 in damages when he dragged the stove across newly installed wood flooring inside the residence. Burgess told detectives that he sold the stolen stove to a man who paid Burgess $200 for the stolen stove.

Detectives are continuing to investigate whether Burgess was involved in additional burglaries that have been reported at homes in Lexington County, Metts said.
