Detectives Obtain Arrest Warrants for Man in Home Break-Ins

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives in cooperation with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office obtained arrest warrants for a 27-year-old Little Mountain man on charges that the man broke into one home on Northshore Drive near Chapin on March 7 and broke into a second home on Northshore Drive on March 21.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives will serve James Robert Peterson, 27, of 197 West Church Street, Little Mountain, with arrest warrants on two counts of second-degree burglary when Peterson is released from the Newberry County Detention Center, where Peterson was being held on Wednesday, April 2 on bail totaling $20,000. The Sheriff’s Department placed a detainer on Peterson with the Newberry County Detention Center.

An arrest warrant alleges that on March 7 Peterson unlawfully entered a home on Northshore Drive with the intent to steal items that Peterson could sell or trade in order to acquire illegal drugs, Metts said. Peterson stole prescription medications, one Sony Play Station 3 video game controller and one bottle of Eternity cologne for men. Detectives later recovered the video game controller and cologne.

An arrest warrant also alleges that on March 21 Peterson unlawfully entered a second home on Northshore Drive with the intent to steal items worth a combined total of $1,499 that Peterson could sell or trade in order to acquire illegal drugs, Metts said. Peterson stole one Savage Arms .270-caliber rifle, one Apple iPad Mini tablet computer, one wireless Bluetooth speaker and one cordless Craftsman drill.

Deputies developed information that some of the items that were reported stolen on March 21 from the Northshore Drive home were being stored near Peterson’s home in Little Mountain in Newberry County, Metts said. Deputies contacted the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and met with Newberry County sheriff’s deputies at Peterson’s home.

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office deputies searched an abandoned building near Peterson’s home and found the tablet computer, cordless drill and wireless speaker that were reported stolen on March 21 from the Northshore Drive home, Metts said. Officers also found a Chapin High School Class of 2007 graduation ring that was stolen from the Northshore Drive home on March 21.

Detectives determined that Peterson sold for $150 the Savage Arms .270-caliber rifle that Peterson stole on March 21 from the Northshore Drive home, Metts said. Detectives later recovered the stolen rifle, which was worth about $599.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Peterson to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can report information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
