Deputies Arrest Two Men for Robbing Convenience Store

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies in cooperation with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol on Friday, March 28 arrested two 20-year-old Orangeburg men on charges that the two men robbed a convenience store on Charleston Highway near West Columbia at about 9:17 a.m. on Friday, stealing money and cigarettes from the store.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Cody Arringer Johnson, 20, and Kyntorye Cequel Keith, 20, both of 475 Nature Lane, Orangeburg, on arrest warrants on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Johnson and Keith were being held on Tuesday, April 1 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $160,000 for each inmate.

Detectives also obtained arrest warrants for Jaleel Traytwon Miller, 21, of 465-A Bushberry Road, Lot A, Pelion, on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, Metts said. The Sheriff’s Department placed a detainer for Miller with the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center, where Miller was being held on Tuesday on unrelated charges.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 9:17 a.m. on Friday, March 28, Johnson, Keith and Miller committed a robbery at an El Cheapo convenience store at 3862 Charleston Highway while armed with a gun, Metts said. Keith and Miller entered the store, with Miller holding a female store clerk against her will at gunpoint. Keith stole money from the store’s cash register and seven packs of Newport cigarettes. Johnson drove the get-away motor vehicle for Keith and Miller.

Shortly after the robbery occurred, South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 26 in Calhoun County on a motor vehicle in which Johnson, Keith and Miller were riding, Metts said. State troopers detained Johnson on I-26.

Keith and Miller ran away from the motor vehicle following the traffic stop on I-26, Metts said. Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies detained Keith and Miller on Big Beaver Creek Highway in Calhoun County.

The female store clerk positively identified Keith and Miller as the men who robbed the convenience store and detained her against her will at the store, Metts said. Detectives recovered the money that was stolen from the store as well as the handgun that the men used in the robbery.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Johnson, Keith or Miller to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
