Explorers Post Wins Five Awards

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post #106 won five awards during a South Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers competition, which the North Myrtle Beach Police Department hosted in North Myrtle Beach between February 15 and February 17.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said eight members of the Explorers Post participated in the competition.

A team that was comprised of Maj. George Keith, 20, of Lexington; Capt. Joseph Ragsdale, 18, of Pine Ridge; Sgt. Christopher Kimball, 19, of West Columbia; and Cadet Matthew Hagins, 20, of Swansea, won first place in the overall competition, Metts said. The four-person team also won first place in the alcohol enforcement competition, first place in the warrant service competition and third place in the high-risk traffic stop competition.

A team that was comprised of Lt. Morgan Taylor, 16, of Gilbert; Cadet Aaron Anderson, 17, of Lexington; Cadet Tyler Tunison, 16, of Pelion; and Cadet Josh Vincini, 18, of West Columbia, won third place in the alcohol enforcement competition, Metts said.

“I am very proud of awards that the Explorers Post cadets won during the Law Enforcement Explorers competition,” Metts said. “The cadets take their service with the Explorers Post very seriously. They regularly conduct training with full-time sheriff’s deputies, who serve as advisors for the Explorers Post.”

The Explorers Post has served as an excellent recruitment tool for the Sheriff’s Department, Metts said.

Over the years, Metts said he has hired many former Explorers Post cadets to work as full-time deputies. The Explorers Post provides excellent training and personal development for teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement.

Members of the Explorers Post create fingerprint identification cards for children so that children can be readily identified in the event that they are reported missing, Metts said. They also direct traffic at various businesses during the busy Christmas holiday shopping season.

Metts encourages teen-agers and young adults who are interested in careers in law enforcement to join the Sheriff’s Department Explorers Post. To be eligible, you must be ages 14 to 20, with a clean criminal record. You must be enrolled in school and maintain a “C” grade average. Citizens who want additional information about the Explorers Post should contact Sheriff’s Department Lt. Alan Driggers at (803) 785-2581 or via e-mail at adriggers@lcsd.sc.gov.
