Man Arrested for Breaking Into Bar on Two Separate Occasions

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a 40-year-old Swansea man on charges that the man broke into a bar on Jim Rucker Road near Swansea on January 25 and again on February 4, stealing a combined total of $2,500 in cash and coins from the cash register and coin-operated machines as well as four cases of Bud Light beer worth about $80.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Brian Heath Gonzales, 40, of 655 Hyman Road, Lot 3, Swansea, on arrest warrants on two counts of second-degree burglary. Gonzales was being held on Friday, February 14 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $30,000.

An arrest warrant alleges that on the night of January 25 Gonzales broke into the front door of The Barn bar at 706 Jim Rucker Road without the consent of the owner and with the intent to steal items from the bar, Metts said. Gonzales stole $1,000 from the bar’s cash register and also stole four cases of Bud Light beer.

An arrest warrant further alleges that on the night of February 4 Gonzales broke into the front door of The Barn bar without the consent of the owner and with the intent to steal items from the bar, Metts said. Gonzales stole $1,500 in quarters from the bar’s cash register as well as coin-operated machines at the bar. K-9 Unit Deputy Adam Clayton and his K-9 police dog partner, Bady, tracked Gonzales’ movements from an area near the bar to Gonzales’ home.

At about 8:41 a.m. on February 4 deputies responded to a call about a burglary at The Barn, Metts said. A citizen found one bag of burglary tools, one bag that contained quarters, disposable lighters and beer on a utility right-of-way in the 600 block of Jim Rucker Road.

Clayton found footprints, which had been left in sandy soil during a strong rainstorm, in the utility right-of-way on Jim Rucker Road near the burglary tools and other items, Metts said.

Clayton and Bady followed the trail of footprints for about four miles from the utility right-of-way, which was near The Barn, to Gonzales’ home on Hyman Road, where deputies arrested Gonzales in connection with the burglaries at The Barn, Metts said. Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted Lexington County deputies in arresting Gonzales since Gonzales lives in Calhoun County.

Detectives and Calhoun County deputies searched Gonzales’ home and recovered one box of Goody’s headache-relief powders that had been stolen from The Barn, Metts said. Detectives determined that the money bag found on the utility right-of-way on Jim Rucker Road contained about $1,500 in quarters that had been stolen from The Barn.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Gonzales to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
