Child Safety Seat Inspections

A total of 11 Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies are certified to inspect child passenger safety seats that motorists install in motor vehicles in order to transport young children.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said the 11 deputies, primarily resident deputies, conduct child passenger safety seat inspections as an extra duty assignment. Inspections are conducted only by appointment.

Deputies who serve as certified child passenger safety seat technicians require between 30 minutes and one hour for an inspection of a child passenger safety seat that is installed in a motor vehicle, Metts said. During the inspection, deputies ensure that the safety seat is installed properly and in working order. Deputies also verify that the manufacturer did not issue a recall for the seat.

Deputies who are certified child passenger safety seat technicians can show parents how to properly secure their children in safety seats and explain the best locations for securing a safety seat in a motor vehicle, Metts said.

Citizens who live in northern Lexington County can contact the following deputies in order to schedule an appointment for a child passenger safety seat inspection:

Sgt. Tony Ayers: (803) 231-8568
