Woman Arrested for Unlawfully Possessing Gambling Devices

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Thursday, January 30 arrested a 46-year-old woman on charges that the woman unlawfully possessed two illegal video gambling devices that Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators seized on January 16 at a tavern that the woman owns on Emanuel Church Road near West Columbia.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Deborah Lee Truett, 46, of 348 Rudwick Drive, Lexington, turned herself in at about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Lexington County Lexington County Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington, on arrest warrants on two counts of unlawfully possessing gambling devices. Truett was being held on Thursday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Arrest warrants allege that on January 16 narcotics investigators in cooperation with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division found that Truett operated two illegal video gambling devices at the Horseshoe Tavern, 2710 Emanuel Church Road, Metts said. Truett told her employees to pay cash to customers who won games playing one table-top Game Gallery III video gambling device and one table-top CA video gambling device. The gambling devices were equipped with remote systems that are controlled by key fobs, which Truett possessed, that could alter the gaming board on each gambling device from an illegal gambling game to a legal game.

On January 16, investigators seized the two illegal video gambling devices and $938 in cash at the Horseshoe Tavern, Metts said.

On January 17, a Lexington County magistrate ruled that the two gambling devices that investigators found at the Horsehoe Tavern were illegal gambling devices, which were subject to seizure by law enforcement officers, Metts said. Under South Carolina law, a magistrate must determine whether each individual gambling device is illegal.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal gambling devices to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can report information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
