Detectives Arrest Three Men for Breaking Into Three Homes

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives arrested one 17-year-old Lexington man, one 18-year-old Lexington man and one 19-year-old Batesburg man on charges that on Friday, January 24 the three men broke into one home on Hatton Lane near Lexington, broke into a second home on Turtle Cove Court near Lexington and tried to break into a third home on Brandon Court near Lexington.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives arrested Alexander Rhodes Jeffcoat, 17, of 121 Northpoint Drive, Apartment 1201, Lexington; Colin Tyler Soles, 18, of 321 O’Neil Lane, Lexington; and Zachary Rabon Varney, 19, of 2647 Spann Road, Batesburg, on two counts each of first-degree burglary, one count each of second-degree burglary and one count each of criminal conspiracy. Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney each were being held on Sunday, January 26 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $320,000 for each inmate.

An arrest warrant alleges that between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney forced open the rear door of a home on Turtle Cove Court, Metts said. The three men stole one .357-caliber revolver, one 9-mm semi-automatic handgun and one 12-gauge shotgun worth a combined total of $1,000. Detectives later recovered some of the firearms, which were found in a motor vehicle in which Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney were riding.

An arrest warrant also alleges that between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney forced open the rear door of a home on Hatton Lane and stole two firearms, one iPad tablet computer and two cameras, Metts said. Detectives later recovered some of the stolen items, which were found in a motor vehicle in which Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney were riding.

An arrest warrant further alleges that at about 3:11 p.m. on Friday Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney tried to force open the rear door of a home on Brandon Court, Metts said. The homeowner was home at the time of the burglary and reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Department, providing deputies with a description of the men who tried to break into her home as well as a description of the red Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle that the men drove away in.

Shortly after the burglary occurred at the Brandon Court home, Detective Steve Collins conducted a traffic stop on the red Ford Explorer on Hickory Trace Court, which is within one mile of the home on Brandon Court, Metts said. Collins placed Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney in investigative detention. The Brandon Court homeowner positively identified Varney as the man who tried to force open the rear door of her home. Collins later arrested Jeffcoat, Soles and Varney.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Jeffcoat, Soles or Varney to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
