Deputies Arrest Two Men for Stealing Cell Phone from Motor Vehicle

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Sunday, November 17 arrested a 33-year-old Columbia man and 34-year-old Chapin man on charges that the two men unlawfully entered a motor vehicle that was parked outside a home on Summit Point Drive near Chapin and stole one Blackberry Bold cellular telephone.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Deputy Joshua Ryan, who recently was assigned to answer calls for help from citizens in the Chapin community, arrested Ryan Lawrence Pyle, 33, of 2 Bee Haven Road, Columbia; and William Randolph Walker, 34, of 745 Dreher Island Road, Chapin.

Ryan arrested Pyle on arrest warrants on one count of breaking into a motor vehicle and one count of third-offense possession of marijuana as well as charges of second-offense driving a motor vehicle with a driver’s license that had been suspended and failing to provide motor vehicle registration upon demand, Metts said. Pyle was being held on Monday, November 18 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $16,895.

Ryan arrested Walker on an arrest warrant on a charge of breaking into a motor vehicle, Metts said. Walker was being held on Monday at the county Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 3:34 a.m. on Sunday Pyle and Walker unlawfully entered the motor vehicle parked outside the Summit Point Drive home and stole the Blackberry Bold cellular telephone, Metts said. A witness provided deputies with a description of a tan 2001 Oldsmobile Alero sedan that Pyle and Walker drove away in after stealing the cellular telephone.

Ryan conducted a directed patrol for the tan 2001 Oldsmobile Alero sedan in the Timberlake Plantation neighborhood and saw the sedan driving out of the neighborhood, Metts said. Ryan conducted a traffic stop on the sedan, which Pyle was driving. Ryan found that Pyle had a flashlight in his lap. Ryan found that Walker possessed two flashlights and one pair of synthetic leather gloves. Ryan arrested Pyle and Walker.

While conducting an inventory of the Oldsmobile Alero, Ryan found the Blackberry Bold cellular telephone, which had been reported stolen, on the floor of the driver’s compartment, Metts said. Ryan also found a small amount of marijuana and the remnants of a marijuana cigarette in the sedan.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Pyle or Walker to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
