Shooting Incident

A Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy shot a Lexington man who encountered the deputy while the man was armed with a handgun on the afternoon of Monday, October 28. The deputy was investigating a call for service concerning gunshots being fired inside the man’s home on Mineral Springs Road near Lexington.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Deputy Billy Womble, 33, arrived at the Mineral Springs Road home at about 1 p.m. in order to investigate the call for service concerning gunshots being fired inside the residence. The man encountered Womble while the man was armed with a handgun in his home, pointed the gun at Womble and threatened Womble with the gun. Womble fired his service weapon at the man in order to eliminate the threat that the man posed to Womble’s personal safety. The man later died.

Metts asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate the shooting incident. That is Metts’ standard practice whenever a deputy is involved in a shooting incident.

Womble was placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the SLED investigation, Metts said. On May 29, 2001, Metts appointed Womble to serve as a deputy.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office is working to notify the man’s relatives about his death, Metts said. The Coroner’s Office will not release the man’s name until his relatives have been notified about his death.
