Woman Arrested for Physically Abusing Two-Month-Old Girl

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Wednesday, September 25 arrested a 22-year-old Lexington woman on charges that the woman caused severe injuries to a two-month-old girl whom the woman was caring for. The two-month-old girl suffered a skull fracture, multiple rib fractures and a fractured clavicle.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives arrested Amberly B. Lomax, 22, of Lexington, on a charge of inflicting great bodily injury upon a child. Lomax was being held on Thursday, September 26 at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $175,000 bond.

Under South Carolina law, infliction of great bodily injury upon a child is a felony that carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison, Metts said.

An arrest warrant alleges that on September 22 the two-month-old girl was admitted as a patient at Children’s Hospital at Palmetto Health Richland with great bodily injury to her person, including a skull fracture, Metts said. Medical personnel at the hospital performed a skeletal survey on the two-month-old girl’s body and detected that the girl also had suffered 13 rib fractures and a fractured clavicle. The two-month-old girl suffered the injuries between June 29 and September 22.

Lomax was responsible for caring for the two-month-old girl at the time that the two-month-old girl suffered the injuries to her skull, ribs and clavicle, Metts said. Lomax could not explain to detectives how the two-month-old girl was injured repeatedly.

The physical abuse that the two-month-old girl suffered was reported to the Sheriff’s Department after the girl received medical treatment at a Lexington Medical Center urgent-care facility, Metts said. The two-month-old girl later was transported to Children’s Hospital at Palmetto Health Richland, where the girl was continuing to undergo medical treatment on Thursday.

The South Carolina Department of Social Services took emergency protective custody of the two-month-old girl, Metts said. The two-month-old girl is expected to fully recover from her injuries.
