Detectives Charge Two Men with Possessing Stolen Riding Lawnmower and Handgun

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Tuesday, September 17 charged two 26-year-old Lexington men with possessing one Craftsman riding lawnmower that had been reported stolen, one 9-mm Diamondback handgun that had been reported stolen and one motorcycle license plate that had been reported stolen. Both men previously were arrested on other charges and were being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives on Tuesday served Travis Leon Horton, 26, of 1106 Bluefield Road, Lexington, and Charles Heyward Spires, Jr., 26, of 132 Boiling Springs Lane, Lexington, with arrest warrants on one count each of receiving stolen goods. Horton was being held on Tuesday at the Detention Center on bail totaling $105,000. Spires was being held on Tuesday at the Detention Center on bail totaling $47,130.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 4 p.m. on September 3 Horton and Spires possessed one Craftsman riding lawnmower that had been reported stolen on August 27 from a home on Bluefield Road near Lexington, one 9-mm Diamondback handgun that had been reported stolen on June 15 from a home on Bushberry Road near Pelion and one motorcycle license plate that had been reported stolen from a parking lot on South Lake Drive near Lexington, Metts said. Detectives recovered the stolen lawnmower, handgun and motorcycle license plate after executing a search warrant at Horton’s home.

Detectives determined that Horton bought the riding lawnmower and handgun from Spires and knew that the lawnmower and handgun had been reported stolen, Metts said.

Detectives further determined that Horton accepted the stolen motorcycle license plate from Spires and placed the license plate on a motorcycle that Horton owns, with full knowledge that the license plate had been reported stolen, Metts said.

On September 4, officers with the Lexington Multi-Agency Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) arrested Horton on charges that Horton operated a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory at his home, Metts said. Officers also charged Horton with possessing heroin, possessing marijuana, unlawfully possessing four handguns and unlawfully possessing a prescription painkiller. In addition, officers seized about $3,000 in cash from Horton’s home.

On September 7, detectives arrested Spires on charges that Spires possessed four fishing boats and trailers worth a combined total of $51,800 that had been reported stolen to law enforcement, Metts said. Detectives also charged Spires with stealing two electric guitars, one acoustic guitar and one 42-inch, flat-screen television worth a combined total of $2,830 from a home on Stephanie Drive near Lexington.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Horton or Spires to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
