Man Arrested for Abusing a 3-Year-Old-Child


Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Monday, September 16 arrested a 53-year-old Gaston man who is accused of using his hands to punch a 3-year-old boy several times in the boy’s body, causing a fracture in the boy’s right hip as well as other injuries.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Michael Anthony Still, 53, of Gaston, on an arrest warrant on a charge of inflicting great bodily harm upon a child. Under South Carolina law, inflicting great bodily harm upon a child is a felony that carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison.

Still was being held on Monday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing, Metts said.

An arrest warrant alleges that on Sunday, September 15 Still assaulted the 3-year-old boy, using his hands to punch the boy several times in the boy’s body at a Gaston home, Metts said. As a result of the assault, the 3-year-old boy suffered a fractured hip as well as a seizure. At the time of the assault, Still was alone at the home with the 3-year-old boy, and Still was responsible for the well-being of the 3-year-old boy.

Deputies went to the Gaston home at about 8:45 p.m. on Sunday in order to investigate a report that the 3-year-old boy had been assaulted, Metts said. The 3-year-old boy already had been taken to Children’s Hospital at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital for medical treatment.

Witnesses identified Still as the man who had assaulted the 3-year-old boy, Metts said. In addition to the fractured right hip, the 3-year-old boy suffered severe bruises and swelling on his face, upper torso and lower torso. The motive for the incident remains under investigation.
