Man Charged with Operating Methamphetamine Laboratory

Officers with the Lexington Multi-Agency Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) on Wednesday, September 4 charged a 26-year-old Lexington man with operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory at his home on Bluefield Road near Lexington. Officers also charged the man with possessing heroin, possessing marijuana, unlawfully possessing four handguns and unlawfully possessing a prescription painkiller. In addition, officers seized about $3,000 in cash.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said officers on Wednesday served Travis Leon Horton, 26, of 1106 Bluefield Road, Lexington, with arrest warrants on charges of third-offense manufacturing methamphetamine, third-offense possession of methamphetamine, third-offense possession of heroin, third-offense possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute it, possessing weapons during the commission of a violent crime, possessing pseudoephedrine that was unlawfully converted from a pill form to a powder form and second-offense possession of a prescription painkiller. Horton was being held on Wednesday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing on the charges.

Officers obtained the arrest warrants after executing a search warrant on Tuesday, September 3 at Horton’s home, Metts said.

Arrest warrants allege that officers found five plastic bottles that had been used as reaction vessels to manufacture methamphetamine at Horton’s home, Metts said. The bottles, empty battery casings and empty packages of pseudoephedrine were found in a closet in a bedroom at Horton’s home as well as in one suitcase and one backpack that officers found outside the home. Officers also found less than one gram of methamphetamine at Horton’s home.

NET officers dismantled and safely disposed of the five reaction vessels that were used to manufacture methamphetamine at Horton’s home, Metts said.

An arrest warrant also alleges that officers found 18 pills of hydrocodone in the master bedroom of Horton’s home, Metts said. Horton did not have a prescription for hydrocodone.

An arrest warrant further alleges that officers found pseudoephedrine in a blender at Horton’s home that had been unlawfully converted from its original pill form to a powder form, Metts said. Officers found four handguns in the home that Horton unlawfully possessed.

An arrest warrant also alleges that officers found between 28 grams and 100 grams of marijuana at Horton’s home that Horton intended to sell, Metts said. In addition, officers found a clear plastic bag in the home that contained more than one gram of heroin.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal drug activity in Lexington County to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).

NET is comprised of officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Batesburg-Leesville Police Department and Lexington Police Department, Metts said. The sheriff and municipal police chiefs implemented NET in 2001 in order to enhance drug enforcement in Lexington County.
