Students Donate More than 100 Stuffed Animals to Sheriff's Department

Students in an early childhood education class at the Midlands Technical College Airport Campus donated 118 stuffed animals to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies, detectives and victim assistance officers will provide the stuffed animals to children who are victims of crimes or who are involved in traumatic incidents in order to help comfort the children.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Sgt. David Nieves, Code Enforcement Officer John Hatchell and Code Enforcement Officer Chris Mixon accepted the 118 stuffed animals on behalf of the Sheriff’s Department on Monday, July 29. Nieves supervises code enforcement officers, resident deputies and school resource officers in the South Region Patrol District, which is based in Pelion. Hatchell and Mixon serve as code enforcement officers in the South Region Patrol District.

A group of students in the principles of ethics and leadership in early childhood education class at the Midlands Technical College Airport Campus donated stuffed animals to the Sheriff’s Department as part of a leadership and advocacy project, Metts said. The goal of the donation was to help the Sheriff’s Department better serve children who are in difficult circumstances.

Metts said the following students in the early childhood education class participated in the group project to donate stuffed animals to the Sheriff’s Department: Shelley Anderson, Steven Butterfield, Jennifer Gilbert and Susan Mosley. Johna Bucanan taught the class.

“We are very grateful for the donation of the stuffed animals,” Metts said. “The donation of stuffed animals will assist deputies in fulfilling our agency’s mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County.”
