Deputies Arrest Three Persons in Shoplifting Ring

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies in cooperation with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 28-year-old Columbia man, 51-year-old Columbia woman and 54-year-old Columbia woman on charges that the man and two women were part of a shoplifting ring that targeted a sporting goods business on Piney Grove Road near Irmo. Members of the shoplifting ring stole camping, fishing and hunting equipment from the business and later returned to the business in order to return the stolen items and seek a refund.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Thomas Ryan Melton, 28, of Columbia, on Sunday, June 30 on arrest warrants on three counts of shoplifting, one count of criminal conspiracy and one count of obtaining goods under false pretenses. Melton was released from the Lexington County Detention Center on Monday, July 1 on a personal recognizance bond.

Deputies arrested Edwina Marie Evans, 54, of 7602 Hunts Club Road, Apartment 0-101, Columbia, on Monday on arrest warrants on charges of shoplifting and criminal conspiracy, Metts said. Evans was being held on Monday at the county Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Deputies arrested Kim Ineze Evans, 51, of 7602 Hunts Club Road, Apartment 0-101, Columbia, on Monday on arrest warrants on charges of shoplifting, criminal conspiracy and obtaining goods under false pretenses, Metts said. Kim Evans was being held on Monday at the county Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing. Edwina Evans and Kim Evans are sisters.

A loss prevention officer at Sportsman’s Warehouse at 476 Piney Grove Road contacted the Sheriff’s Department on Saturday, June 29 and reported that members of the shoplifting ring stole fishing and hunting equipment from the business, Metts said. Edwina Evans stole two packs of Scientific Anglers fly fishing line and one Michael Murphy fishing hook worth a combined total of $103.39 from the sporting goods business. Kim Evans later returned the three stolen items to the sporting goods business and obtained a gift card as a refund for the stolen items.

Kim Evans then stole two Flextone turkey game calls and one Big Lake turkey game call worth a combined total of $91.97 from the sporting goods business, Metts said. Melton used his white 1990 Honda Civic to drive Edwina Evans and Kim Evans away from the sporting goods business after the shoplifting incidents.

On June 21, Melton stole four pieces of camping, fishing and hunting equipment that were worth a combined total of $126.22 from the sporting goods business and later returned the stolen equipment to the business, obtaining a gift card as a refund for the stolen items, Metts said. On June 21, Melton also stole a Kershaw Brawler folding pocket knife worth $29.99 from the sporting goods business.

Deputies arrested Melton on Sunday at a business at the intersection of Decker Boulevard and O’Neill Court near Columbia, Metts said. A Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputy assisted Lexington County deputies in arresting Melton.

Deputies arrested Edwina Evans and Kim Evans on Monday at the sisters’ apartment, Metts said. Richland County Sheriff’s Department fugitive investigators assisted Lexington County deputies in arresting Edwina Evans and Kim Evans.

Metts said the case remains under investigation. Deputies might arrest additional persons in connection with the shoplifting ring that targeted the sporting goods business.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Edwina Evans, Kim Evans or Melton to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
