Sheriff James R. Metts

Major John Allard, PIO Office, 785-2415, 24-Hour Press Box: 799-2001, Ext. 1100

Two Men Arrested for Stealing Boom Crane

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies in cooperation with the Cayce Department of Public Safety on Wednesday, June 5 arrested a 30-year-old Gaston man and 49-year-old Gaston man who were caught in the act of stealing a crane boom worth $15,000 from a property on Charleston Highway near Cayce.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Michael Adam Owens, 30, of 902 Bethany Church Road, Gaston, and Murray Jackson Walker, 49, of 776 Cherry Blossom Road, Gaston, on a charge of grand larceny. Owens and Walker were being held on Thursday, June 6 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting bond hearings.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 1:03 p.m. on Wednesday Owens and Walker stole a crane boom worth $15,000 from the Charleston Highway property, where the owner stores equipment for his business, Metts said. The property owner does not know Owens or Walker and did not give Owens or Walker permission to remove the crane boom from the property.

The property owner contacted the Lexington County Communications Center and reported that he saw Owens and Walker load the crane boom onto a trailer that was attached to a gray 2010 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was parked at his property, Metts said. A telecommunications operator at the Communications Center initially sent two Cayce Department of Public Safety officers to investigate the incident since the two officers were near the property.

The two Cayce Department of Public Safety officers found that Owens and Walker were in the process of loading the crane boom on the trailer and directed Owens and Walker to stop what they were doing, Metts said.

A sheriff’s deputy then arrived at the Charleston Highway property and determined that Owens and Walker intended to steal the crane boom and sell the equipment for scrap metal at a metal recycling company, Metts said. The deputy also determined that Owens was wanted on a family court bench warrant that was issued after Owens failed to make court-ordered child support payments in Lexington County. The deputy arrested Owens and Walker.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Owens or Walker to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
